India - How to Pay Property Tax
ProcedureEdit
- Owners of properties in the state are responsible for paying property tax to the Municipal Corporation or the department designated by the respective state government.
- Pay all your outstanding property tax on or before the date as decided by the respective state government.
- Non-payment of property tax can impose a hefty penalty - an interest at the rate decided by the respective state department is subjected for payable
- Property tax shall be paid offline (Municipal offices or at banks)
- Payment can be made either Online i.e. via Net Banking, Credit card, Debit card, etc. or Offline i.e. via Cash, DD or Cheque
In Person
- Please make sure that you have the assessment for property tax in hand. Otherwise, please go to your area municipal / ward office and submit the documents, property number and other property details to the respective authority and obtain the property tax amount assessment advice. One can do the same at the time of paying at the office too. Knowing this information prior will be helpful in knowing the
- In order to pay property tax in person, Please visit the local municipal office. Submit the property assessment slip / Holding number/respective unique number for your property at the respective counter. Authorities will verify the details and announce the payment. Please pay the amount to complete the process
- Payment can be made in Cash / DD / PO / Cheque
- User will be provided a receipt for the payment received and keep it safe for future reference.
User shall pay at the bank as approved by respective state government using the challan as prescribed. User should fill in the required details in the challan to make payment.
- Note:
- In some states applicant shall approach over the counter services like CSC centres/e-seva etc to apply.
- In some states applicant shall apply using the respective state department online portal.

- The property tax amount is calculated based on the residential area. So, it varies from one property type to other.

- The rate prevalent in the street where the property is located

- Type of occupancy (owner or tenant)
- The total span of the building’s existence.

The property tax paid is valid for one year. Every year, you should renew it. (In certain place the tax will be collected for six months too)

- Land owners / Property owners are subjected to pay certain amount to the concerned local government or to the municipal corporation of the concerned area are called as property tax.
- Property tax or 'house tax' is a local tax imposed on owners of an apartment, land and building by the Government. The governing authority of the jurisdiction levies the tax to the owner in which the property is located.
- Property tax clearance is required for most of other service like Water, Sanitary, Electricity connection etc.
- Owners of residential properties are liable to pay property tax to respective department on a specified period of time and has to be paid regularly (period can be 6 months or one year in respect to the state).
- Tax Exemption is applicable for selected citizens / organizations (Educational Institutions, Charitable institutions, Ex-serviceman / In-service man, retired pensioners association, NGO Homes/Teachers Association Buildings) as applicable.

- All residential and commercial (non-residential) properties are assessed for tax.
- The information about all the new constructions, existing construction and improvements to the property must be provided to the respective Department of the state to make necessary changes to tax assessment.
- Note: There will be strict action against the defaulters. It is advisable to pay the tax on time to avoid such situations.
