An International Driving Permit is a translation of your national driving license. The IDP allows motorists to drive vehicles in foreign countries. You must always have your IDP along with your national license at all times. The only places to obtain this permit are those endorsed by the International Automobile Federation. In Mexico, the associations endorsed by the International Automobile Federation are the National Automobile Association - Automobile Club of Mexico (ANA) and the Mexican Automobile Association (AMA).

Apply In -Person at AMA

1. Gather all the documents mentioned in Documents section below before you go to the AMA offices.
2. Visit the AMA office in either one of their two branches in Roma and Del Valle.
3. At the office produce all the legible and original copies of the required documents
4. The assisting officer will check and validate your documents
5. Pay the required fees for the IDL
6. Your IDL will be processed and issued with 20 minutes.

Apply by a Proxy at AMA

If you are unable to apply for your IDL in person, you can opt for using a third party to submit the application for you. However the representative has to submit:

• A simple power of attorney signed by two witnesses
• Copy of the IFE of all those who sign the letter (witnesses and the one who does the process)
• Voter's credential of the person who carries out the procedure.
• To be verified at any of the branches of AMA and issuing of the IDL.

Apply by Courier at AMA

• If you are inside Mexico or Abroad, you can make your application by sending legible copies of all the required documents to: Recreo 93, Col. Del Valle, CP 03100, Mexico City and Orizaba # 7 Col. Roma, Del. Cuauhtemoc, CP 06700, make a deposit or bank transfer for the cost of the permit and attach a pre-paid guide of the courier company you hire for the return of your documents. 
• The documentation must be sent along with the original of the deposit or transfer.

Apply at the Automobile Club of Mexico (ANA)

• Present all the necessary documents for your application as stipulated by ANA and your IDL will be processed and issued to you.

By Mexican Automobile Association (AMA).

• passport size photographs
• Minimum valid passport for one year
• Minimum valid Mexican driver's license for one year
• Proof of address no more than two months old (telephone, electricity, land or water)
• In case of being a foreigner, the immigration form (FM2 or FM3) valid for a minimum of one year
• If you require a fiscal invoice copy of your RFC

It is important to contact the nearest embassy or consulate of the countries in which you plan to drive, to learn about the requirements required of foreigners. There are many countries that require, in addition to presenting a valid driver's license from the country of residence, to carry an international driving permit (International Driving Permit - IDP, for its acronym in English). The international driving license is a document of wide international recognition issued by the affiliated agencies of the International Automobile Federation (FIA). In Mexico, some affiliated associations that can issue the IDP are the National Automobile Association - Automobile Club of Mexico (ANA), the Asociación Mexicana Automovilística (AMA) and the Mexican Organization of International Automobile Sports (OMDAI).

International driver's licenses are valid in the member countries of the conference of the United Nations Organization on Road Traffic held in Vienna, Austria, on November 8, 1968; otherwise they will not be able to drive in certain destinations, for example, in Japan.

• If you plan to rent a car in a country, check very well the requirements for driving as a foreigner, since there are times when you are asked to have a certain length of time with an international driver's license. The information can be found in the embassy of the country they plan to visit.
• The IDL is printed in eight languages: German, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, French, English, Portuguese and Russian.
• It is a valid translation of your local driving license, holder may drive in countries that have signed the convention, whether owned or leased car (except in the country where the IDP is issued)
• IDP holders may drive private motorcycles and automobiles not exceeding 3.5 tons and the number of seats excluding the driver may not exceed eight.
