Kenya - Obtain Milk Carriage Permit

  • The first step is to acquire a suitable vehicle for the milk transportation and qualified personnel to setup the milk carriage business. Make sure the milk transport vehicle complies with the laid out hygienic and operational requirements.
  • Contact the nearest Kenya Dairy Board office to provide the relevant details of the carriage business and required documentations. A list of KDB Office branches can be downloaded through this link.
  • Here you will be given and application for a Permit Form 1 to fill and submit. After this you are supposed to make an online form of the application.

Apply OnlineEdit

  1. Visit the Kenya Dairy Board Licensing Portal to make your application for the milk carriage permit and pay the requisite application fees
  2. If you are not registered , fill in the required information which include
    (i). Business details
    (ii). Applicant details
    to register.
  3. After registration, log in to your online account and make a payment for application for inspection. The fee is Ksh 600.
  4. This will be followed by an inspection of your vehicle and if successful, you are required to pay the requisite license fees, which is Ksh 1,000 . This you can do by logging into your Kenya Dairy Board Licensing Portal dashboard.
  5. Once payment is made the permit will be processed within fourteen days and it can be downloaded from your online dashboard.
  6. The milk carriage permit has a validity period of one year and you can start operations immediately.
  7. Pay monthly cess and levy as and where applicable. Other conditions of issuance of the license should be observed (Non-compliance can lead to suspension of permit)

  • Milk handlers who transport or convey raw milk from one point (source) to another (destination) are required to apply for a milk carriage permit from KDB.
  • Licensing of milk carriers is an important activity in regulation of the dairy industry. It facilitates regular inspection of transport carriers to ensure compliance to milk quality and safety requirements.
  • In Kenya no person is allowed to carry milk or permit any milk to be carried in a prescribed area except with a valid milk carriage permit.

No permit is required for the carriage of milk
  1. by Kenya Co-operative Creameries Ltd., in its own vehicles or in vehicles under its control; or
  2. contained in a tetrapak or other prepacked heat-sealed container; or
  3. obtained by a person for his own consumption from a dairy licensed under the Dairy Industry (Licensing of Retailers) Regulations, or from a shop licensed by a local authority to sell milk.

  • In Kenya no person is allowed to carry milk or permit any milk to be carried in a prescribed area except with a valid milk carriage permit any person who contravenes this shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable to a fine not exceeding ten thousand shillings or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding one year or to both.
