Procedure

1. To apply for an IDP you can contact DRV or the transport department in your locality to get an application form.
2. Submit the completed form along with your valid driver's license, passport and permanent residence card.
3. Pay the application fee.
4. It will take about 5 days before you can receive your IDP.

Eligibility

Who can obtain an IDP:

• Holders of valid driver's licenses
• Locals and those foreigners who have permanent residence permits

Fees

Explain the fees structure which is required for obtaining the certificate/document.

Validity

The permit is valid for three years and it can be used in 84 countries that signed the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic in 1968

Notes:

• The document is not valid for driving in the country where it was issued.
• An IDP is not a driving licence in its own right. You must be able to present both your IDP and your local driver's licence when you travel.

Need for the Document

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an internationally recognised document that allows an individual to drive overseas. Requirement for an IDP varies from country to country but it's recognised in most countries. It will be good to hold an IDP especially if you are planning to drive in a country where English is not a native language since an IDP is a translation of your local licence into many languages. Following is a procedure on how you can apply for one.

Things to remember when you are abroad:

• For security reasons it will be better if you keep your IDP and your driver's licence separately when travelling.
• If you become a permanent resident in another country, you will need to apply for a local driver's licence.
