Procedure

• You can obtain an application by either contacting your local CAA Travel Center to pick-up or have an application mailed to you, or by printing the application.
• Please print, complete and either take the application, along with 2 signed, full face passport photographs, fee of $25.00 Cdn. and a copy of your Canadian driver's license (photocopy - both sides) to the CAA office nearest you for across the counter processing, OR mail the application to the address in the 'Office Locations and Contacts' section of this page.
• Mailed in applications must include the fee payment in the form of a Bank draft, money order or cheque in Canadian funds drawn on a Canadian bank payable to the Canadian Automobile Association. If you wish to pay by Visa or MasterCard your card number and expiry date must be provided. One to three weeks should be allowed for the IDP to reach you.
• An IDP cannot be post dated, extended or renewed. Each time a new IDP is required, the applicant must complete a new application form, produce a valid Canadian driver license, provide 2 new photographs and the fee.

Required Documents

• The applicant must be 18 years of age or older
• Valid Canadian provincial drivers license (regardless of nationality)(photocopy - both sides)
• 2 passport photographs (computer generated photos are not acceptable)
• Complete and sign the CAA IDP application form (no other form is acceptable)

Need for the Document

The 1949 (IDP) is a special license for tourists, authorized by a UN treaty among nations of the world, for the purpose of allowing motorists to drive vehicles in international traffic without further tests or applications. It is proof that the holder possesses a valid driver's license issued by a competent authority in their country of residence.
