Apply In-Person:

1. To apply for registering a co-operative society in Zambia, the applicant will have to contact the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA), for the main office visit link.
2. Make sure that you have all the documents that are listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
3. An application form will be provided to the applicant at the PACRA office.
4. Once understanding the guideline properly, the applicant has to fill in all the necessary information in the application form.
5. When the application is made by two or more societies, at least two duly authorised officers of each society shall sign the application which shall be accompanied by the resolution of each society concerned approving the application for registration.
6. Submit the application form with necessary attachments to the office.
7. Once the application has been verified, it will be forward to the registrar for approval as per the Co-operative Societies Act.
8. If the Registrar approves the application for registration, he/she will issue a certificate of registration together with a copy of the by-laws certified as having been duly approved and registered.
9. Pay the fee as per given in the “Fees” section of this page.
10. After the verification of all the documents, the certificate will be accessible.
11. The applicant gets the certificate in around six weeks.

• Cooperative by-laws or constitution of the co-operative society.

• Minutes of the meeting in which it was agreed to form a Cooperative.
• List of members with their address, paid-up shares, National Registration Cards(NRCs).

• Registration certificate is valid until the co-operative society is wound up.

• Before going to the PACRA office applicants should organize themselves in a group of ten or more persons or two or more societies wishing to form a co-operative society.
• Once the number of formations is met, conduct a general meeting and let the agenda of the meeting be in line with agreeing on forming the cooperative society.
• Conduct an election, electing the cooperative officials
• As a group, make the cooperative by-laws (constitution) and have it printed.
• Visit the District cooperative office to obtain the letter of approval of the cooperation society formation.

• Names of the cooperative members, addresses, NRCs and signatures
• Proposed name of the Cooperative
• Proposed address of the Cooperative
• Dates of formation

• The certificate of registration proves the cooperative society has been legally registered.
• Cooperative Names should be registered in order to be protected as a society name of one so that it may not be used by another.

• Cooperative Societies Act of Zambia link.

• It is a proof that a cooperative society is in an association of one or more individuals or corporations that have entered into partnership with one another for community project.
