Procedure
Apply via Agent
- Complete a MV3001 Application Form. You may complete the MV3001 online, print it, and bring it to a DMV customer service center.
- Pay your renewal fee.
- CDL license holders may need to show their Federal Medical Examiner Certificate (Fed Med card) and certify their tier of operation.
- CDL license holders with a hazardous materials (HME) endorsement must pass complete the HME application form MV3735, pass the HME knowledge test and provide proof of Citizenship or legal status in the U.S. After applying and meeting the HME requirements, fingerprinting is required.
- CDL license holders with a school bus (S) endorsement must complete the School Bus application form MV3740, pass the school bus knowledge test and the pre-trip and driving skills test in a school bus. See list of authorized testers.
- Out-of-state driver license renewal
- Complete a Wisconsin Driver License application (form MV3001). Record your temporary out-of-state address in the field labeled Mailing address. You must also have a vision exam completed within the last 90 days. Results can be recorded either on the MV3001 or on the Certificate of Vision Examination by Competent Authority.

Instructions
A renewal notice will be mailed to the last known address on your driver record 45 to 60 days prior to your birthday in the year your driver license expires. The renewal notice will inform you of the general requirements to renew your driver license.
A regular driver license may be renewed up to one year prior to the expiration date. A probationary driver license can be renewed 90 days prior to the expiration date.
Vision test options
- The examiner at the DMV service center will give you a free vision screening test.
- If you prefer, you may have the vision screening done at your expense by a vision specialist and recorded on form MV3030V. Present the completed form MV3030V with your application for renewal. Your vision screening must be done within 90 days prior to your application for renewal.
Out-of-state driver license renewal
- If you are a Wisconsin resident, temporarily out of state, and need to renew your driver license or identification card, you may do so by mail. You must be a U.S. citizen who has a valid Social Security number on file with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). Non-U.S. citizens cannot apply by mail and MUST appear at a DMV service center to apply.
- You can renew your regular license up to one (1) year prior to its expiration date. You can renew your probationary license up to 90 days prior to its expiration date. Your license cannot be expired for more than eight (8) years and cannot be a Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a Hazardous (H) or School Bus (S) endorsement.
Your renewal request cannot be processed if:
- Your most recent Wisconsin license was "Valid Without Photo."
- A prior license or ID card renewal has been processed for you through the mail or using our online service.
