You are a Wisconsin resident; are at least 16 years old; holding a valid out-of-state driver’s license or not; you can obtain a Wisconsin driver’s license by following:
- You are New to Wisconsin
- You just moved to Wisconsin and have a valid out-of-state license; you must apply for a Wisconsin driver’s license within 60 days of establishing Wisconsin residency. If you are from 16-18 years old, you just can transfer your out-of-state instruction permit or license when you have held it at least six months and been violation free for the 6 months prior to applying for your Wisconsin license. - Visit a suitable Wisconsin DOT DOT OnlinePresent required documents and follow all of officer’s guiding. You must pass the vision exam. The appropriate knowledge, sign and road tests will be required if the out-of-state is expired more than 8 years. At last, have your photo taken and pay the applicable fee to receive your temporary paper license that is valid for 45 days, the completed license will arrive in the mail within 10 business days. This completed license will be a Wisconsin probationary license or a Wisconsin regular license depending on your condition.

- Obtain a Wisconsin instruction permit
- Visit a suitable Wisconsin DOT #cities Dot link to present the required documents and follow all of officer’s guiding to take and pass the vision and knowledge exam Vision Exam, pay the applicable fee to obtain your instruction permit that is used to practice driving for your skills test.
- If you are from 16-18 years old, you must hold the permit for at least six months, complete your driver education course, accumulate at least 30 hours of supervised driving experience including 10 hours during darkness, and be violation free within the six months before you can move to the next step.
- If you are 18 years old and older, you must hold the permit for at least 7 days to move to the next step.
- Obtain a Wisconsin probationary license
- This probationary license will be issued to either new residents with their surrendered out-of-state license that has been expired more than 6 months, or the applicant is under 21 years old, or the application has less than three years of licensed driving experience. This license will be valid for 2 years, after that you can renew it to get the regular license valid for 8 years.
