1. Go to the county clerk office.
2. Present and submit documents required.
3. Complete the application form.
4. Pay the marriage license fee.

• Proof of identification and age (valid ID, birth certificate, passport).
• For applicants who are 16 or 17:
  • Certified copy of birth certificate
  • Parental consent
• Dissolution or divorce decree, death certificate (if previously married)

Both the bride and groom must:

• not be blood relatives
• be 18 years of age or older
• be of the opposite sex

If either the bride or groom resides in West Virginia, the couple must apply in the county where he/she resides, but may be married anywhere in the state.

For applicants between 16 - 17 years old

Under state law, applicants who are 16 and 17 years old may obtain a marriage license if they have obtained parental consent. If a court-appointed legal guardian is providing consent, a certified copy of the appointment is required. Either the parents or the legal guardians must provide a notarized affidavit of consent of the marriage at that time. Underage applicants must provide valid identification, and are subject to a three-day waiting period.

Marriage License Fee: $36.00 approximately

The marriage license is valid for 60 days, and may only be used in West Virginia.

The license is effective immediately after issuance.

• Both parties must appear in person when applying for a marriage license.
• The court in each city and county has appointed persons who are eligible to perform civil weddings.
