1. Any person intends to possess or stock sandalwood (in excess of five kilograms or as per the limit fixed by the respective state) shall apply to the respective district forest officer / divisional forest officer having jurisdiction over the area.

4. Please visit the respective office and consult with the designated authority. The authority will provide the details for applying. Please collect the application form or write on a plain A4 sheet as advised.
5. Please complete the application form. Attach all the required documents as per the “Required Documents” section of this page along with the appropriate payment of fees as per acceptable mode (challan/DD) and submit it in 3 sets to the designated receiving authority as advised.
6. The fees can be paid through challan/DD or as per the advised mode. Please refer to the “Fees” section of this page for more details.
7. After receiving the application, authorities will check the application, documents and the payment of the fees. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
8. Authorities will make entries about this application in the manual record or electronically using the computer and provide a record number for reference.
9. The authority will also sign and seal one set (photo copy of the original) of the application and return it to the applicant. This signed application is also the proof for the submission of the application.
10. Please keep them safe for future reference.
11. ”SMS” triggered update on application status will be sent to the applicant’s mobile. So, keep track of the notification from the department.
12. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the authenticity of the documents.
13. Once the documents are authenticated, the authorities will check the bonafide (about the intention or real need) of the applicant.
14. On satisfactory grounds, the authority will issue a licence for the possession of sandalwood.
15. The status, viz. Approval will be conveyed to the applicant through a “SMS” or through applicable norms.
16. The permits will be sanctioned in triplicate with seal signature of the respective issuing authority or the subordinate. The issuing authority will hand over (or issued as per applicable norms) the original and retain the other copies as counterfoil for record in office.
17. This entire process can be completed in 3 days or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.

  • The licensee shall immediately inform the respective District Forest Officer or the concerned authority, in writing, of the actual source from which the licensee intends obtaining such additional consignment of sandalwood.

• In the case of sandalwood purchased at the Government sales depot in the other states and imported into the native State, the permit shall be that issued by the Government of the respective State or any authority in that host State responsible for the sale of sandalwood in that State and such permit shall be valid only for transport of sandalwood to the destination specified therein.
• Any change of place of storage should be notified.
• The licence holder should maintain a stock register showing the receipt issued and balance of sandalwood and all its by-products including sandalwood at the premises.
• Do not submit fake documents as proof to get the permit.
• Incomplete application will not be accepted.

• No person shall possess or stock sandalwood (in excess of five kilograms or the limit fixed by the respective state) without a valid sandalwood possession permit (licence). Whenever any person intends possessing or stocking sandalwood in excess (of five kilograms or the limit fixed by the respective state) should obtain a licence.
• No person shall import sandalwood into or export sandalwood from, or move sandalwood within any place in the State, unless such sandalwood is accompanied by a permit.
