United States - Obtain Certification in Thanatology


Procedure

Apply In-Person:
Step 1: APPLICATION FOR CETRIFICATION

  1. To obtain certification in thanatology, the applicant has to make the application through Association for Death Education and Counselling (ADEC) website or tap the following link
  2. The applicant can sign in either via their social profile (LinkedIn, Face book) or via their ADEC credentials. (If the applicant doesn’t have ADEC profile the applicant can register by clicking on “Click here to Register” menu.
  3. The applicant has to enter all the necessary information in the application form.
  4. Make sure the applicant has to upload all the required documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. Review the application and click submit.
  6. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee that is mentioned in the “Fees” section of this page.
  7. The applicant will receive an email indicating their approval (or request for additional information) once their application review has been completed.


Note: If the applicant does not receive a follow up email, the review is not complete. Please ensure that the applicant have adeccredentialing@management-hq.com marked as a safe sender to receive these follow up emails.


Step 2: TAKING THE EXAM

  1. After meeting all of the requirements and being approved to take the certification exam, the applicant will receive a study guide which contains a sample test and registration information. Registering for the certification exam will also give access to the practice exam.
  2. The exam is given online. They can take the exam anywhere that gives access to the internet, either from their home or office.
  3. The certification exam consists of 150 multiple choice questions. The exam must be completed in three hours, no time for breaks. If the applicant needs to take a short break during the exam, no extra time will be given for completion of the exam.
  4. In case the applicant fails the exam, they may take it again the following for half the price.

  • Transcript. Types of courses that count towards the 60 contact hours: Any course that is about thanatology (death, dying, bereavement, suicide, hospice, loss and grief. Applicants must show documentation and prove that coursework covered materials related to thanatology.

Eligibility

To take the certification exam, applicants must have:

  • A bachelor's degree (include transcript) and two years of verified related experience, or a master's or doctorate (include transcript) and one year of verified related experience
  • 60 documented contact hours in thanatology and related topics.
  • Letters of support from supervisors or colleagues.

  • $380 USD – ADEC Member Rate
  • $599 USD – Non-member Rate




Validity

  • Validity of Thanatology is for 3 years.

  • Applicants must complete the application form before submitting it. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • Applicants must provide genuine information while applying for this procedure.


General Exam Information

  • The exam is scheduled once per year, typically in November.
  • The exam should be taken on computer, in home, office or other identified secure location.
  • The exam must be completed within 3 hours of logging in.
  • To accommodate exam takers across time zones a nine-hour access window is provided.
  • The exam is administered in English.
