Uganda - Get Motor (Car, Vehicle) Certificate of Insurance


Procedure

“Please Note”: It is NOT ALLOWED to pay physical cash to buy motor third-party insurance certificate effective 1st July 2020.

Apply Using Mobile- Platform:
1. To pay your Motor third-party insurance using MTN Mobile money follow the steps below;

  1. Using their MTN Mobile phone, the applicant should Dial *165# USSD code to begin the application process.
  2. Select Option 4 (Payments)
  3. Select Option 5 (Fees and Taxes)
  4. Select Option 5 (Motor 3rd Party)
  5. Alternatively, the applicant can dial *165*4*5*5# to skip all the above steps
  6. Enter your car registration number plate and the amount to be paid will automatically be displayed.
  7. Enter your Mobile Money PIN to confirm and a sticker reference number will be sent to you via SMS.
  8. The applicant should then present this SMS to any insurance company or agent their choice and once verification of the vehicle number plate and sticker reference number is done, a physical motor vehicle insurance certificate sticker will be availed to the applicant.
  9. The applicant should go ahead and display the motor vehicle insurance certificate on their vehicle


2. To pay your Motor third-party insurance using Airtel Money follow the steps below;

  1. Using their MTN Mobile phone, the applicant should Dial *185# USSD code to begin the application process.
  2. Select Option 7 (Financial Services)
  3. Select Option 6 (Insurance)
  4. Select Option 1 (Motor 3rd Party)
  5. Alternatively, the applicant can dial *185*7*6*1# to skip all the above steps
  6. Enter your car registration number plate and the amount to be paid will automatically be displayed.
  7. Enter your Airtel Money PIN to confirm and a sticker reference number will be sent to you via SMS.
  8. The applicant should then present this SMS to any insurance company or agent their choice and once verification of the vehicle number plate and sticker reference number is done, a physical motor vehicle insurance certificate sticker will be availed to the applicant.
  9. The applicant should go ahead and display the motor vehicle insurance certificate on their vehicle


Apply In-Person:

  1. The applicant can also apply for the motor insurance certificate by visiting any Centenary Bank Agent across Uganda.
  2. The contact details for Centenary Bank can also be found in the Office Locations & Contacts of this page.
  3. Centenary Bank Agents can also be located through the following Link.
  4. Upon visiting the bank agent, the applicant should submit his request to get a motor insurance certificate.
  5. At this point the bank agent will assist the applicant to purchase the motor insurance.
  6. The applicant should provide the following information to the bank agent to assist in the application process.
    • Applicants name
    • Vehicle Number plate
  7. Upon entering this information, the amount of to be paid will be returned.
  8. The applicant should proceed to hand over payment to the agent so as to complete the payment process.
  9. Upon completion of the payment, the applicant will receive an SMS message with a sticker Reference Number.
  10. The applicant should then present this SMS to any insurance company or agent of their choice and once verification of the vehicle number plate and sticker reference number is done, a physical motor vehicle insurance certificate sticker will be availed to the applicant.
  11. The applicant should go ahead and display the motor vehicle insurance certificate on their vehicle
  12. There may be cases where a Centenary Bank agent is also an Insurance agent in which case the transaction is completed at the same point.

Eligibility

  • The service is available for everyone, although this will be dependent on your vehicle data appearing in the Motor Vehicle registry currently at URA. This means that if your vehicle does not appear in that database, you will not be able to consume the service at the onset.

  • The fee varies depending on the type cover and the class in which the vehicle belongs.



Validity

  • The validity of the certificate of insurance is one year.

  • It is key to note that you can only subscribe to this new service if your car is on the URA eTax database, otherwise, a taxpayer is unable to utilize this if they still subscribe to the old vehicle management system.
  • You can register to the URA eTax database through the following link

  • The law requires all motor vehicles to be insured in Uganda, and the insurance is supposed to cover against financial loss, theft, damages, and third-party liabilities.
  • Every motor vehicle operated on Uganda roads must be insured.

  • The new motor third-party mobile payment is a mobile platform where people can pay motor third-party premiums using their phones. The service is currently available on two telecommunications networks, MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda.

  • It provides safe, easy, fast and convenient way of making payment.
  • It enables quick processing and settlement of your claims.
  • It safeguards the public s’ exposure to fake stickers.

  • It is important to understand that by taking a motor insurance, you are transferring the risk from yourself to the motor insurance company.
  • There are three distinct types of motor insurance cover that you should Know:
    • Third party covers third-party body injury and property damage that might occur in an accident.
    • The Comprehensive cover covers third party and second party but does not cover first party and family. Owner and family members are required to take personal accident cover
    • Third party fire & theft cover covers theft in addition to covering third party liability
  • You also need to understand the different classes of motor insurance and this include commercial, PSV, and Private.
