Uganda - Contracting a Civil Marriage

HOW TO APPLY

  1. An Intending couple should appear in person before the Registrar of Marriages for their district for an interview.
  2. The intending couple should fill a Notice of Marriage before a Registrar of Marriages Marriage Notice
  3. You will then be issued an assessment forms to make payments at any bank of their choice.
  4. The register will then make a public notification of the Marriage by publishing it on the Registrar of Marriages’ notice board for 21 calendar days.
  5. If there are no objection to the notice of marriage, the marriage will be registered and the ceremony should takes place after 21 calendar days but not before the lapse of 90 calendar days. Marriages are celebrated from Monday to Friday, between 10 am and 4 pm, The parties appear with two witnesses before the Registrar who performs the ceremony and thereafter issues them with a Marriage Certificate

NOTE

  • If there is an objection, a caveat is placed and the matter is referred to court for settlement
  • Alternatively, a client can exercise the self-assessment option by logging on to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) website at www.ura.go.ug


Required Documents

  • Proof of nationality for example a voter’s card, passport or national identification card.
  • An LC 1 letter to prove residence in any district of Uganda for at least 15 days in the district in which the marriage is intended to be solemnized.
  • A passport size photograph for identification.
  • Marriage affidavits that conform with S.10 of the Marriage Act
  • In case of foreign nationals, a letter from your Civil Registration or Vital Statistics Office confirming that the party is not married.
     

Where parties are between 18 and 21 years, they should in addition to 2 above submit:

  • A birth certificate to prove parentage.
  • A consent letter from the father or mother or legal guardian
  • A photocopy of the identification of the consenting authority

  • Registration of a marriage is a legal obligation for couples who intend to get married in Uganda, for the marriage to be recognised as a legal marriage
