Trinidad and Tobago - Register a Birth


Procedure

  • A birth should be registered within three months of the date of birth at the Registrar of Births and Deaths in the district in which the birth took place.
  • If the birth has not been registered within three months as prescribed by law, an appointment is required with the Registrar of the Civil Registry to enable Late Registration. This can be done by contacting the Registrar General's Office using the information at the "Office Locations and Contacts" section in this page.

  • National ID Cards of the parents and informant.
  • Birth Notification Card issued by the hospital or medical centre.
  • Marriage certificate of the parents.
  • Electronic Birth Certificates of the parents.

Eligibility

  • If the mother was married to the baby's father at the time of the birth, the mother may register the birth without the father being present.
  • If the mother and father were not married at the time of the birth, the father's details can only be entered into the register if both parents attend together to register the birth. If the father's details are not entered at the time of registration, it may be possible for this to be done at a later date. Follow the link below for information on insertion of a father's name.
  • A legal guardian or person present at the birth can also register the birth.

There are no fees charged for registering a birth.
