Trinidad and Tobago - Guidance to Apply for Student Loan

  1. To apply for a loan offered to students in tertiary-level through the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP), you will need to complete an application form which can be obtained from this link - HELP Application Form.
  2. The HELP programme is administered by participating commercial banks in Trinidad and Tobago, including First Citizens Bank, RBTT Bank, Republic Bank and Scotiabank Trinidad and Tobago. Application forms are available at all branch locations of these banks.
  3. Bring the completed HELP application form and a Letter of Acceptance from the tertiary level institution at which you are enrolled to the loans department of a participating commercial bank.
  4. Applicants are required to pay the loan application fee of TT$400.00, per loan. The application fee includes a charge of TT$36.00 for a credit report.
  5. The bank will check if your application is properly completed in accordance with HELP terms and conditions. The bank will also conduct an interview to obtain additional necessary information. You will be advised within four to six weeks of the status of your loan application.
  6. Once your application is approved, the bank will schedule a meeting with you to work out the repayment terms and to have you sign relevant documents. The bank will all discuss with you repayment terms, which vary according to the amount that was approved and your income situation. Unemployed applicants begin repayment three months after completing their course of study. Employed applicants begin repayment immediately.

Eligibility

To apply for a financial assistance for tertiary-level education through the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP). Applicants must be a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago and enrolled in an approved tertiary-level education programme in any public or private TLI in Trinidad and Tobago or the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Students can obtain financial assistance for tertiary-level education through the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP). The programme is a special soft loan facility made available through the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (TEST) that can help cover the following expenses:

  • Tuition fees.
  • Accommodation expenses.
  • Airfare and other transportation costs.
  • Personal maintenance costs and living expenses.
  • Books and related materials.
  • Special equipment costs.
  • Other related tertiary education expenses.
