Apply In-Person

• To apply for a Transport or a Commercial driver license in Tamil Nadu the applicant has to approach the RTO office to which your area belongs to. Following link can provide you information related to the list of RTO office : RTO Office List
• Please make sure you have all the documents that are listed down the “Required Document” section of this page.
• Following application forms are required Form 8, Form 5 (only for those who trained through Driving School) and Form 15 (Those who trained through Driving School).. Application forms can be downloaded from the following link : Application Forms
• The applicant should make sure they are eligible for applying for the license by reading through the eligibility criteria that has been listed out under the “Eligibility” section of this page.
• Application forms can also be obtained from the appropriate RTO offices that should be completed and presented with appropriate fees.
• Present the completed application forms in one of the counter and pay the appropriate fee where the officials would start processing your application.

Apply online - Tamil Nadu Upgrade Your Driver License online with Images

1. First one has to make sure that all the required documents are in hand to apply online.
2. In order to apply for online, please follow the link : online portal
3. Please select "Online Services" from the menu and click on "Driver License Related Services".
4. You will be taken to a new screen where you have to select “Tamil Nadu” in the drop down menu against “Please select the State from where the service is to be taken”.
5. In the next window, please click “Apply Online” to select “Service on Driving License” option. In the following screen select the state West Bengal from the drop down menu and please hit “Continue” to get the next screen.
6. Please select and enter appropriate option prompted for and click “proceed” to get the new page. This new page will prompt to enter details and also need to upload the required documents. Once completed, click “submit” at the bottom of the form to process the application.
7. Take printout of the application form including Acknowledgement and go to nearest RTO office before 11:30 a.m. and submit the application to the RTO official. Authorities will advice the fee amount to be paid. On the appropriate counter pay the fees and submit the application and documents to process the application as per how the apply in person will be processed

Printing application:

1. You can take printout of online application form with the help of the link: Application Link
2. Select “Tamil Nadu” in the drop down menu against “Please select the State from where the service is to be taken”
3. In the next window, please click “Download Forms” to select “Print application form” option
4. Please enter your application number and other detail in the next window and hit ”Submit” to follow the next window to get the printout.
   

Appointment:

1. You can book appointment with RTO using the following link Online Appointment link
2. Select the state and click on the “Appointment (Slot Booking)” to select “Driving skill Test” option. In the new window select appropriate option and hit submit to process your request to book appointment.

• Aadhaar Card
• Form 5 (only for those who trained through Driving School ).
• Form 15 (Those who trained through Driving School) .
• Driving License
• Valid Learner’s License for which additional class of vehicle is required.
• Documents of vehicle in which applicant proposes to appear for test of competence to drive (such as Registration Certificate, Insurance Certificate, Tax Card, Pollution under Control Certificate, Fitness Certificate in case of Transport Vehicle).
• Consent letter from vehicle owner, to conduct driving test in his vehicle if the vehicle is not owned by the applicant.
• Passport size photographs-3 copies

• The person should have a valid driving license.
• Should have completed 20 years of age for Transport Vehicles with 1 year experience in LMV & Badge.

License to drive a Non-Transport Vehicle is valid for 20 years from the date of issue or until the holder attains the age of 50 years, whichever is earlier. After that, the License is renewed every 5 years.

Transport Vehicle License is valid for a period of 3 years from the date of issue or renewal.

A driver's license is a legal document issued by the state. It expresses a persons capability to operate a motorized vehicle, such as a motorcycle, car, truck or a bus, on a public roadway.

As per Motor Vehicle Act 1988, a valid Driving License is necessary to drive any motor vehicle on public roads.
