Entry requirements by country
Bear in mind that to enter certain countries you may need a passport that is valid for far longer than the proposed duration of your stay (e.g. at least six months after the date of your return journey). You may also need a visa and other documents. Read the entry requirements for your destination carefully.

Sample Identity Card
You will be receiving your passport and/or identity card within 10 working days by registered post (or within 30 days if sent to an address outside of Switzerland)after your interview and the acceptance of your application.

Depending on which canton you live in, you may apply for an identity card either in person at the residents registration office in your commune or at your cantons passport office (in person, by phone or by internet depending on where you live).

The issuance of Swiss identity card begun July 1994. It is in the form of a plastic photocard. It may be used as travel document when travelling to all Schengen Treaty countries and the UK. (Note: The European Union countries do not fully correspond with the Schengen treaty countries).
In 2003, the identity card was slightly revised. The so-called Kinegramm has since been integrated into the card body for better protection. The new IDK provides a machine-readable zone (MRZ) that can be find positioned at the bottom of the back and is etched with a laser.
