Sweden - Obtain Marriage Certificate

A marriage certificate (also known as marriage record or certified certificate of marriage) is an official recorded document issued by a governmental authority that proves that the couple listed on the marriage certificate have a legal marriage. However in Sweden you have to register the certificate for it to be legally binding.

Apply In -Person
  1. After the wedding ceremony, you will get a marriage certificate in Swedish, you can also request one in English. This does not apply legally, but can be seen as a memory from the marriage ceremony.
  2. Visit the Swedish tax agency for registration of the marriage certificate. A marriage contract, may be designed in many different ways. Therefore, the Swedish Tax Agency has no completed forms, so you don’t require to fill a form for the registration  
  3. Pay the registration fee of 275 SEK to register an action. Pay the money at the Swedish Tax Agency's bank giro 227-5782. Enter one of the spouses' social security number as a reference to complete the transaction.
  4. You marriage certificate will be registered and legally binding to the marriage after registration.
  5. Once the certificate is restarted, you can visit a public notary for an official stamp for authentication.
  6. And if you are a foreigner you can take the certificate to you embassy for attestation if necessary

Instructions

  • After the marriage ceremony you will get a marriage certificate in Swedish and, if requested, one in English in connection to the ceremony. After the wedding ceremony your documents will be sent to the Swedish Tax Agency for registration.
  • If you require other documentation to verify your marriage in your country, besides the marriage certificate, please contact the Swedish Tax Agency. With your marriage certificate you can also contact a Notaries Publics for an official stamp.
