South Dakota - Apply for an Architectural License


Procedure

Apply In Person

  1. To Apply for an Architectural License, the applicant has to approach the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards link
  2. Obtain a professional degree in architecture from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The most common degrees are the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) or Master of Architecture (M.Arch.).
  3. There is a comprehensive examination administered by NCARB that assesses your knowledge and skills in various areas of architecture. It typically consists of multiple divisions or sections covering topics such as site planning, building systems, construction documents, and more.
  4. Once the applicant has completed his/her education, gained the required experience, and passed there, they can apply for licensure. Contact the state licensing board or architectural registration board in the state where you intend to practice to obtain the application forms and instructions.
  5. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
  6. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
  7. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  8. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
  9. Submit the application form and the documents to the authorized officer.
  10. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
  11. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
  12. Then the application will be processed further.
  13. If the application is approved, the applicant will be issued an architectural license from the office.
  14. This entire process can be completed within 15 - 30 days or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.
