South Africa - Registration of adoptions


Procedure

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for Registration of Adoptions in person, the adoptive parents must visit any nearest domestic office of Department of Home Affairs in his/her province.
  2. Please click on the following link for the address and contact information of the Department of Home Affairs Offices: Link Click on the province name which is applicable to you and you will get the details according to that.
  3. Visit the DHA office and get the application form for Recording of Adoptions (BI-193) from the concerned department. Or click to download: Link
  4. Make sure that you have all the documents that are listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. Complete the application form with required information and attach all the required documents with the form.
  6. Submit it at the concerned office of the Home Affairs Department and pay the prescribed fees as instructed.
  7. After submission, your application and attached documents will move forward for further verification and validation processes.
  8. After the completion of all necessary processes, if your application and documents are found in order, your request will be approved.
  9. Then, the respective adoption will be recorded and registered in the child’s birth register.

Eligibility

  • Any person, who had adopted a child from an adoptive agency, should record the adoption in the birth register of DHA in proper format.
  • The adoption should have done legally and the parent applying should possess the adoption order received from the court.

  • It is important to note that the Department of Home Affairs is responsible only for the recording of the adoption of a child in the child’s birth register if so requested by the adoptive parents.
  • Any other matters relating to adoption fall within the duties of the Department of Social Development (previously Welfare & Population Development).



Required Information

  • Forenames and Surnames of the persons for whom the application is filled
  • Particulars of the Parents or guardian (in case of minors)
  • Place and date of birth of the persons for whom the application is filled
  • Address and contact details of the applicants
  • Identity number of the applicants

According to the Child Care Act, the Department of Home Affairs must record the adoption of a child in the child’s birth register if so requested in the recommended format by the adoptive parents.
