Apply In-Person:

1. To Apply for Registration of a Trade Union, the applicant must go to the Department of Employment & Labour office in South Africa Contact Link
2. The application form must be obtained from the authorities at the Labour Department of Labour office, or else it can also be downloaded from the official website linked here Application Form Link
3. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
4. Before applying, the applicant must have obtained the resolution by the members to form the trade union.
5. The application form must be filled with all the necessary details, and along with the required documents it must be submitted to the registrar at the Labour Department.
6. After that the application will be verified by the registrar for the eligibility requirements of the trade union.
7. If the details and the documents submitted by the applicant is valid and legitimate, and then the trade union registration application will be approved by the labour department.
8. After the approval, the applicant will be issued with the registration certificate.
9. There is no fee to apply for the Trade Union registration application.
10. The processing time to get the trade union registration will be intimated to the applicant after applying.

• By registering the Trade Union, the members can negotiate, promote, or present the problems in wages, working hours and conditions between the workers and employers. Registered Trade Union helps with the rights of the workers in a more organised manner, therefore Trade Union Registration is a necessary document under the Labour Act.
