Apply via Agent
Apply In-Person:
- To apply for late registration of birth in person, the applicant must visit the nearest office of the Department of Home Affairs.
- Please click on the following link for the address and contact information of the Department of Home Affairs Offices: contact. Click on the province name which is applicable to you and you will get the details according to that.
- Find the DHA office nearest to your location and visit the office to get the application for Late registration of Birth (DHA 24/LRB).
- Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- Now, start filling the form as required. Complete the application form as required with relevant details and information about the applicant and the child.
- Once completed filling the application form, it should be attested with the applicant’s signature with date.
- Attach all the documents with the application form and submit the application package at the DHA office.
- Please pay the fees recommended by the office. The biometrics of the child or person will be recorded whose birth is to be registered.
- Also, fingerprints of the child or concerned person’s parents are recorded. Then, the application will be forwarded to the respective authorities for verification and validation.
- When all the information provided is found true and the documents are found in order, the Director-General of Home Affairs will register the Birth, include the name in the register and issue a Birth Certificate copy to the applicant.

Eligibility
- Any person whose child’s birth is not registered within 30 days is considered to be late registration and can be applied to get registered by this format.
- Any child or person, whose birth is not registered within 30 days, can apply irrespective of the span that exists between the birth and registration.

Instructions
- South African citizens who are outside the Republic should apply for copies of Birth certificates at nearest South African embassy, mission or consulate.
- Undocumented Foreign Nationals who are born in South Africa are issued with a certificate free of charge on registration of their births.
