Apply In-Person:

1. To apply for renewing a Motor vehicle license in person, the applicant has to visit the nearest Registering authority or post office (that issue motor vehicle licences) in his/her province.
2. The contact links for each province in South Africa are listed in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page. Please click the link of your province and look for a nearest Municipality in your location.
3. Contact the Municipality and get details about nearest Registering authority according to your location.
4. Visit the nearest Registering authority or post office with all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page and motor vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2) received from the Department of Transport or Registering Authority.
5. Even after the arrival of expiry date, if you did not receive any notice from the concerned office you have to obtain an Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle (ALV) form from the Registering authority.
6. Now, complete the application form with appropriate information about you and your vehicle for which license has to be renewed.
7. Specify in the application form the type of motor vehicle for which license has to be renewed. Also, pay the prompted fees at the office.
8. Attach the required documents with the application and submit it to the concerned department at the Registering authority or post office.
9. Then, the application will be forwarded to the concerned authorities for further verification processes.
10. Once the verification and validation processes are over, the application will be approved and the renewal of concerned license will be done on the same day of application.

• Any organisation that owns a motor vehicle in its name for which license has to be renewed, can apply through a representative or proxy.

• You must renew your motor vehicle licence every year before it expires. If you fail to renew your licence, you will be liable to pay late licensing penalties and arrears.

• You get a 21-day grace period if you have not renewed the expired motor vehicle licence. The grace period is calculated from the expiry date of the current licence disc.

• Licences for buses must be renewed every six months because their certification of roadworthiness is valid for six months only.
