Apply In-Person:
- To apply for a student loan in South Africa, the student or applicant must first choose a loan issuer/bank according to his/her requirement or convenience. Then, the applicant should pay a visit to the nearest branch of the loan issuer/bank.
- Locations and contact links of some national banks are listed in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page. You can make of use it if you wish to apply in any of those national banks.
- Visit any nearest branch of your loan issuer and get information about the eligibility criteria and their loan provisions. Then, obtain the application form to apply for a student loan, from the respective counter.
- Fill the form with appropriate details and required information in accordance with the provisions of the issuer. Make sure you have attached all the documents listed in the ”Required Documents” section of this page.
- Now, submit the form and required documents to the concerned officer in your loan providing bank or institution’s office.
- The concerned official will validate your documents and go through your application form for verifying if all the documents are in order and your requests meet their provisions.
- If all the documents are found in order, the applicant will get a response about the approval or denial of the loan.
- And if your loan has been approved, your bank account should be credited with the money you requested within 48-72 hours from the date of approval.

Some loan issuers provide online services as well for filling applications. Online procedure for applying Student loan in Standard bank of South Africa is as follows:
- To apply for a Student loan in Standard bank online, you have to visit the following link: Link
- Visit the link and proceed to create an account in the official website of Standard Bank by filling the details in the “Getting Started” page. Specify the type of student from the dropdown menu and answer all the “Yes/No” questions by selecting either of the radio buttons.
- After completing, click on “continue” button and proceed. In the next page, you will be asked to provide consent by clicking “Yes” or “No” radio button.
- Make your selection as applicable in “Consent” page and click “continue” button. In the next page, you will be required to provide consent for marketing in the “Marketing Consent” page.
- Read carefully and provide consent by clicking either “Yes” or “No” radio button and click “continue” button to proceed. In the next page, you will have to carefully read and accept the “Terms and conditions” by selecting the check box and click “continue” button.
- In the next page, some instructions will be displayed about the Student loan application. Note down those instructions carefully and click on “continue” button.
- In the “Your Information” page, provide all the details as required and click on “continue” button. In the “Your Studies” page, provide all academic information as asked and click on “continue” button.
- Also, you can save the application and complete the application later if you want by clicking “save & complete application later” button.
- In “Your Student Loan” page, enter the loan amount details, type of initiation fee payment, branch and language preference of documentation and click on “continue” button. You will get pop-up asking for confirmation of loan amount, click “Ok” button and proceed.
- In “Your Information” page, enter the details as required and click “continue” button. Next page is also “Your Information” page in which you have enter your home address and postal address. Click “continue” button.
- In the next page, you will have to fill the “Surety Pre-screening” and “Surety Consent” tabs by answering all the “Yes/No” questions and click “continue” button.
- In the “Surety Information” page, you will be asked to enter the details of your surety. Then click “continue” button.
- In the last page of application, you will have to provide the “Surety’s employment details” and click on “continue” button.
- After completing and submitting the application, you will be notified about approval of the application. After the approval, the student and surety will have to visit the branch with all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page, to complete the process.
- If all the documents are found in order, the applicant will get a response about the approval or denial of the loan.
- And if your loan has been approved, your bank account should be credited with the money you requested within 48-72 hours from the date of approval.
Required Documents

- Proof of enrolment/registration or Acceptance from the educational institution
- Latest month’s payslip of surety
- Last three months’ payslips or bank statements of surety
- Proof of final academic results for the last year
- Proof of costs for tuition fees on institution letterhead, accommodation and textbooks/equipment

Eligibility
- Only South African Citizens can apply.
- Any student who wants to be funded for his/her tertiary education can apply for a student loan.
- A parent, sponsor or a guardian who has proof of income should stand surety for the student, to pay the monthly interests.
- If no one is there to stand for surety, a part-time student, who is full-time employed and has proof of income, can apply on his own surety.
- The student applying for the loan must be registered with a South African institution for his/her tertiary education.

Instructions
- The interests charged on student loans may vary depending upon the loan provider. So, while you search for a loan provider, carefully look for the best deal available.
- They calculate how much you need to repay after graduation based on your salary.
- It will take half the amount of time to repay a loan if you stay at home. Carefully consider this when getting a loan.
- The money from the student loans gets deposited straight into your bank account, and you can use it as you please.
- Just make sure you check on your loan issuer’s specific documentation requirements, as this can be a real confusion.

Need for the Document
Tertiary education has become so expensive these days and a student, at any cost is needed to get a student loan from any of the providers available.
- A surety is a person who must take responsibility to make sure that your loan is repaid even if you cannot pay it. Usually, parents or guardians who are earning a minimum monthly income of R3 000 – R6 000 can stand as surety for your student loan.
- The loan can be used to cover your tuition fees, as well as accommodation for full-time students, textbooks, equipment and other education related expenses. This may differ between financial institutions.
