Apply In-Person:

1. To apply for getting permit to import pathology specimens in person, the applicant has to visit the Import Export Policy Unit of the Animal Health Directorate of South Africa.

3. Visit the office and get the Application to import pathology specimens and raw materials for laboratory of pharmaceutical use into the RSA from the relevant department.
4. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
5. Complete the form as required with relevant details under respective sections. After completing the application form, attach the required documents with the completed form.
6. Then, proceed to submit the package to the Director of Animal Health at the office in person for further processes. Make the necessary payment as directed.
7. You can also submit the application package through post to the postal address or fax to the fax number or email to the email address of the Import Export Policy Unit of the Animal Health Directorate.
8. After all the processes have got completed, the concerned authorities will issue a veterinary import permit and a veterinary health certificate template.
9. This veterinary health certificate template should be used while completing a veterinary health certificate by the veterinary authorities in the exporting country before the product is shipped.

• Protocol of research or letter containing the purpose of the importation and information the imported product

• Any person living in South Africa, who wants to import animal products, potentially infectious or contagious things into the Republic of South Africa, can apply.
• Any pathology specimens or biological material such as blood or serum or diagnostic samples from animals or bacteria, viruses or any pathogens of animals can apply to get licensed.

Permit to import Pathology Specimens: R180.00

Import permits are valid for a limited period and for one consignment only.

Once the State Veterinarian at the national office has approved the importation, it takes three to five working days to process the application and issue the permit.

• Please state on the application form whether the permit will be collected or if it has to be mailed to you.

• A veterinarian authorised by the veterinary authority of the exporting country must complete the veterinary health certificate in English before the departure of the consignment.

• If you need any information on the exact requirements for a specific pathology specimen or biological product, you can obtain specimen copies of the veterinary import permit and the veterinary health certificate from the Permit Office of the Directorate of Animal Health.
