South Africa - Export Chemicals


Procedure

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for Exporting chemicals in person, the applicant has to visit the office of International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC).
  2. Find the address and contact details of the office of ITAC in the following link: Link
  3. Visit the office of ITAC and obtain the application form to apply for Exporting chemicals (IE 361), from the Import and Export Control department. Or click here to download: Link
  4. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
  5. Complete the form as required with relevant details under respective sections. After completing the application form, attach the required documents with the completed form.
  6. Then, proceed to submit the package to the relevant authority at the office in person for further processes. Make the necessary payment as directed (if any).
  7. After submission, the completed form and corresponding documents will be put into further verification and validation processes.
  8. Once all the processes got completed, the authorities will perform necessary actions for the permission grant process.

  • Letter of recommendation from the Department of Environmental Affairs (for chemicals in Montreal Protocol)

Eligibility

  • Any person living in South Africa, who wants to export certain chemicals, can apply.
  • The chemicals that are about to be handled must comply with the provisions of the Montreal Protocol and the 1988 United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances

When you apply for a permit to export chemicals, you must get a letter of recommendation from the South African Police Service (SAPS) or from the Department of Environmental Affairs, depending on the chemical you want to export.

  • Particulars of the chemicals

  • Country of manufacture

  • Tariff number

If you want to export certain chemicals, you need to apply for and obtain permission by following a prescribed procedure from the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC).

Chemicals are controlled to comply with the provisions of the Montreal Protocol and the 1988 United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. These are international efforts to protect the ozone layer and fight international drug dealing respectively.
