South Africa - Apply for a Commercial Fishing Right


Procedure

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for a Commercial Fishing Right in person, the applicant has to visit the distribution centre announced in the Government Gazette.
  2. You can collect any information regarding the application procedure from the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries.
  3. The address and contact details of the department can be found in the following link: Link Click the link under your province name to find relevant details.
  4. Visit the respective centre and obtain an application form to apply for Commercial Fishing Right from the relevant department.
  5. Make sure that you have taken all the documents required for the process, when you visit the centre.
  6. Complete the form as required with relevant details under respective sections. After completing the application form, attach the required documents with the completed form.
  7. Then, proceed to submit the application package to the relevant authority at the centre in person for further processes. Make the necessary payment as directed.
  8. After submission, the completed form and corresponding documents will be put into further verification and validation processes.
  9. Once all the processes got completed, the authorities will perform necessary actions for the issuance process of the commercial fishing right.

Instructions

  • You can only apply for a commercial fishing right upon invitation in the Government Gazette when long-term commercial fishing rights are given to individuals and companies for a period of eight to fifteen years.
  • The invitation published in the Government Gazette will contain information on the distribution point where you can collect an application form.
  • You must pay a non-refundable prescribed fee as specified by the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries in the Gazette.

  • If a person in South Africa wants to harvest fish or engage in a fishing-related activity for commercial purposes, he/she must first be in possession of a commercial fishing right legally obtained by following a prescribed procedure.
  • Commercial fishing rights are allocated to full-time line fishers who depend on line fishing for their livelihood.
