South Africa - Apply for South African Citizenship


Procedure

Apply In Person

  1. To Apply for South African citizenship, the applicant has to approach the Department of Home Affairs link
  2. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer or it can be downloaded from the following link link
  3. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
  4. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
  6. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
  7. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
  8. Once the process gets completed, the applicant gets a call from the office regarding the application and called for an interview. During this interview, you will be asked various questions about your background, language proficiency, and knowledge of South Africa's culture and history.
  9. After attending the interview, the applicant has to wait for the Department of Home Affairs to make the decision for issuing a citizen.
  10. If the application is successful, you will be required to take an oath of allegiance to South Africa and become a citizen of the country.
  11. This entire process can be completed within months and it depends on the individual or the timeline advised by the respective department authority.

Eligibility

  • Permanent resident of South Africa for at least five years
  • Good understanding of the country's language and culture.
  • Clean criminal record and have no pending charges against the applicant.

  • The South African Citizenship Act, 1995 (Act 88 of 1995) was amended by the South African Citizenship Amendment Act, 2010 (Act No. 17 of 2010) which came into operation on 1 January 2013. It brought in updated requirements in areas of different applications around Citizenship.
