South Africa - Apply for Radio Station Licences


Procedure

Apply In-Person:

  1. To Apply for Radio Station Licences, the applicant must go to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa’s (ICASA) office. Contact Link
  2. The application form must be obtained from the authorities at the ICASA office, else the application form can be downloaded from the official website linked here. Application Form Link
  3. The application can be filled either manually or in the online format, but if the application is filled in online format, it must then be taken a printout and submitted.
  4. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. The application form must be filled with all the necessary details, and along with the required documents, it must be submitted to the respective officer in the ICASA department.
  6. The authorities will verify the application and the documents submitted by the applicant.
  7. Then the application will be forwarded to the SATRA for analysing the business plan.
  8. After verification, if all the details are legitimate then the Radio Station License will be will be approved combinedly by the ICASA and SATRA.
  9. The complete fee details for the license application are given in the “Fees” section of this page.
  10. The processing time to get the Radio Station license will take approximately 6 to 12 months.

  • Map indicating the areas of operations.
  • List of Licenses with existing Repeater Systems in the proposed area of operation.
  • Business Plan.
  • Register to indicate the existing system is fully utilized.
  • Spectrum Contention.
  • Examination Result. (If applicable)
  • Copy of payment receipt.

  • As per the Communications Authority of South Africa, it is a necessity to get the approval and license to start a Radio Station. It is against the law to run a Radio Station without the license.
