During lockdown, Applications are welcome through the email address of the South African Civil Aviations Authority.

Apply through email

1. To apply for a Glider Instructor Rating through email, the applicant has to lodge the application through email address of the South African Civil Aviations Authority.

4. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
5. Now, complete the application form with appropriate information under relevant sections. Attest it with your signature once completed.
6. Then, pay the applicable fees as directed to the relevant bank account. Find the information regarding payment in the office website or contact the office.
7. After paying the fees, make scanned copies of the required documents and the completed application form. Proceed to submit it through the following email address: aircrewapplications@caa.co.za
8. Indicate the license number of the particular category that you are applying as the subject of the mail.
9. Then, the application will be forwarded to the concerned authorities for further verification processes.
10. Once the verification and validation processes are over, the application will be approved and the applicable instructor rating will be processed for issuance.
11. When the instructor rating is ready to be collected, the applicant will be sent an SMS from the office and the applicant can collect them by themselves or arrange a courier service for collection.

• Any Glider pilot license holder, who wants to carry on flight instruction training in a glider with a valid class rating, can apply.
• The applying person must have completed required skills test and passed a theoretical knowledge examination.
• The applying entity must comply with all the requirements of rating under the respective category as prescribed in the application form.

The cost for the application process is R 590.00.

The validity of a rating may be synchronised with that of the Glider Pilot License.

Any Glider Pilot License holder, who wants to conduct flight instruction training for reward under the guidance of an appropriately rated and approved Aviation Training Organisation in a glider for which he or she holds a valid class rating by name, must apply in a prescribed format and obtain a rating from the South African Civil Aviations Authority.
