South Africa - Apply for General Work Visa


Procedure

Apply In-Person:

  1. To Apply for General Work Visa, the applicant must visit the South African Embassy or Consulate in the country that they are residing currently. List of SA embassies
  2. The application form can be downloaded from the official VFS global website linked here. Application Form Link
  3. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  4. The application form must be filed with necessary details.
  5. Later, the application form and all the necessary documents should be submitted to the officials at the South African embassy.
  6. The application approval is entirely based on the visa officer decision.
  7. If the visa officer is satisfied with the details provided and the supporting documents submitted by the applicant, then the General work visa will be approved, and the decision will be conveyed to the applicant.
  8. The non-refundable application fee of R2870.00 must be paid while submitting the visa application, and the proof of payment must also be attached along with the necessary documents.
  9. The processing time to get the general work visa is anywhere from 2 to 4 months depending on the applicant’s profile.





Required Documents

  • Application Form Link
  • A valid passport which expires in no less than 30 days after expiry of the intended date of departure. (At least Two unused/blank visa pages must be there in the passport)
  • Two passport size-coloured photographs in the 35X45mm dimension.
  • Original covering letter signed by the applicant. (It should clearly mention the purpose of visit)
  • Passport valid for no less than 30 calendar days after expiry of the intended visit.
  • A medical report not older than 6 months.
  • A radiological report not older than 6 months.
  • Marriage certificate.
  • In the case of a foreign spousal relationship - Proof of official recognition issued by the authorities of the foreign country of the applicant. (If applicable).
  • The affidavit where a spousal relationship to a South African citizen or resident.
  • Documentation proving cohabitation and the extent to which the related financial responsibilities are shared by the parties and setting out the particulars of children in the spousal relationship.
  • Proof of a union. (If applicable)
  • Divorce decree. (If applicable)
  • Proof of court order awarding custody. (If applicable)
  • Death certificate - In case of late spouse.
  • Written consent from both parents and/or sole custody parent with the proof of sole custody.
  • Proof of legal adoption. (If applicable)
  • Legal separation order. (If applicable)
  • Police clearance certificate issued by the police or security authority in each country where the relevant applicant resided for 12 months or longer after attaining the age of 18 years. (The certificate shall not be older than six months at the time of its submission)
  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic area.
  • A written undertaking by the employer accepting responsibility for the costs related to the deportation of the applicant and their dependent family members.
    • If there is no employer, then the proof of sufficient financial means to the value of a minimum of R3000 in the form of three months bank statements.
  • A certificate by the Department of Labour confirming that - Despite diligent search, the prospective employer has been unable to find a suitable citizen or permanent resident with qualifications or skills and experience equivalent to those of the applicant
  • A contract of employment stipulating the conditions of employment and signed by both the employer and the applicant.
  • Proof of evaluation of the foreign qualification by SAQA and translated by a sworn translator into one of the official languages of the republic.
  • A confirmation, in writing, from the professional body, council or board recognised by SAQA by confirming the skills or qualifications of the applicant and appropriate post qualification experience.
  • Proof of payment of the applicable fee.

Eligibility

  • Any foreign applicants who possess the righteous qualifications, and approval contract to work in the South African company is eligible to apply for the general visa application to the embassy.




Fees

  • Non-Refundable application Fee – R2870.00
  • The VFS service fee will be intimated at the time of application.




Validity

  • The general work visa is generally valid for 5 years.
  • However, the validity duration varies for each applicant depending upon the profile.
  • Therefore, the general work visa validity of the applicant will be mentioned on the approval permit issued to the applicant.

Instructions

The applicant before applying for the general work visa to the embassy, the company that the applicant got the job offer must complete these instructions stating to the South African Embassy or Consulate:

  • The company must prove that, despite diligent search, the prospective employer has been unable to find a suitable candidate with qualifications or skills and experience equivalent to those of the applicant.
  • The applicant has qualifications or proven skills and experience in line with the job offer.
  • The salary and benefits of the applicant are not inferior to the average salary and benefits of citizens or employees occupying similar positions in the Republic.
  • A contract of employment stipulating the conditions of employment and signed by both the employer and the applicant is in line with the labour standards in the Republic and is made conditional upon the general work visa being approved.
  • Proof of qualifications evaluated by SAQA and translated by a sworn translator into one of the official languages of the Republic was submitted.
  • Full particulars of the employer, including, wherever applicable, the proof of registration of the business with the Commission on Intellectual Property and Companies (CIPC) must be submitted to the embassy.
