Apply In-Person:

1. To Apply for Destruction of Firearm, the applicant must go to the nearest police station in South Africa. Contact Link
2. The application forms “SAPS 522(a) and SAPS 522(b)” must be obtained from the concerned officer in the police station, or else the application forms can be downloaded from the official website linked here. Application Form and Application Form
3. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
4. In order to destroy the firearms legally, the applicant must submit both the filled application along with the required documents to the concerned police officer.
5. The respective policer officer will give the acknowledgement SAPS Reference number after getting the application for future references.
6. After one month of submitting the application, first the firearm license will be removed from the applicant’s name in the Central Firearms Register. (The applicant needs to check this in the Central Firearms Register office) Location Link
7. If the name isn’t removed, then the applicant must contact the police officer who took the application from the applicant.
8. Within two months the name must be removed from the license, otherwise, the applicant should seek the help from the Station Commissioner and the GFSA in removing the details.
9. Later, the firearm destruction information will be forwarded to the Designated Firearm Officer.
10. The audit will be carried out and after getting the permission from the Registrar in the Central Firearms Register, the Firearms will be destroyed either by melting, pressing or in another manner determined by the Registrar only in front of the Designated Firearm Officer.
11. The process to destruct or destroy a firearm will take more than 3 months of duration.
12. The fee details will also be mentioned to the applicant by the concerned police officer.

Note: A notice will be released by the Designated Firearms Officer to the Registrar within 14 days after destroying any kind of firearms and ammunitions.

• Any individual who owns the license for the firearm is eligible to apply for the “Firearm Destruction” application to the SAPC department.

• The fee details will also be mentioned to the applicant by the concerned police officer.
