Apply via Agent
To change your name in Singapore, you will need a deed poll. This is a legal document drafted by a lawyer that declares that you will renounce your current name, and take a new name, from the date of execution of the deed poll. The deed poll is executed in the lawyer’s presence.
Apply In Person
- To obtain a deed Poll the applicant has to fill an online application form application form this helps lawyers to draft the applicant’s Deed Poll.
- Once the deed poll is ready the applicant will be contacted and requested to come to the office (any branches as per applicant’s choice contact link
- The applicant has to sign it in the presence of lawyers. This is a necessary step because lawyers are legally obliged to confirm the identity of the individual requesting the change of name.
- The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee that are mentioned in the “Fees” section of this page.
- once the deed poll is signed, the applicant should present it to the ICA to have the changes reflected in their system. The applicant can do this directly at the ICA in Kallang contact link or other check ICA check points.
- After submission the new NRIC should be produced and issued within a few days.

Eligibility
- A person can apply for a Deed Poll if you are a Singapore citizen or Singapore permanent resident.
- To change your own name by Deed Poll, you must be at least 21 years of age. If you are under 21 years of age, one of your parents can apply for a Deed Poll on your behalf.
Fees
- Fee to obtain deed poll is $100 for above 21 years of age and $130 for below 21 years of age.

Instructions
- The child's name is an important symbol of his identity and his relationship with his parents. Hence, the consent of both parents must be sought before the child's name can be changed.
- For minors below 21 years of age, the deed poll must be executed by a parent (or legal guardian). The consent of the other parent also has to be sought for the change of name.
- The minor has to be accompanied by his or her parent (or legal guardian) for the change of name to be affected.

Need for the Document
- A deed poll is a legal document used in the change of names. A deed poll is drafted by a lawyer and executed by the name-changer. A deed poll is required before the various authorities (such as the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, or ICA) will process your change of name in your records.
- Changing one's name is a very personal choice, and everyone has a reason why he wishes to change his name sometime in his life. Some of the common reasons are:
- You have just been married, and need to adopt part of your husband's name for migration purposes.
- You are nearly 30 years old and wish to add a new name to your IC when you apply for a new Singapore Identity Card.
- You are a Singapore Permanent Resident (PR) and wish to change your Name in your Singapore Identity Card.
- The ICA may reject certain names in particular, names which are offensive or vulgar may not withstand the scrutiny of the ICA. Additionally, names that resemble famous politicians, or names containing honorary titles like Sir or Datuk may also be rejected.
- The Chinese name in the NRIC may be rejected if it comprises any Chinese character which cannot be found in any Chinese dictionary recognised by the Registrar. (Regulation 4 of the National Registration Regulations).
