Working mothers who are not eligible for paid maternity leave may, beginning the 1st of May 2013, apply to receive the Government-paid maternity benefit (GPMB), as long as they have been in employment for a total of at least 90 days in the 12 months preceding the birth of their child.
GPMB grants the mother a benefit based on the government-paid portion of the maternity leave (GPML), which is equivalent to 8 weeks for the 1st and 2nd confinement, and 16 weeks for the 3rd and each subsequent confinement.
The amount of GPMB paid by the Government will be capped at $10,000 per 4 weeks up to a total of $40,000 in total for 16 weeks based on the mother's average gross rate of pay over the last 12 months before her child is born.
The amount will be paid to the mother in cash. She will need to provide a bank account to receive the payment.
The benefit is also applies to stillbirth cases or for those situation where the infant passes away shortly after birth.
