Others

[edit]

  • PROTECTION OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: Patents are legal rights granted to inventors and assignees to protect their inventions from being used, made, or sold by others without their permission. By renewing a patent, the owner ensures that their exclusive rights are maintained and enforced.
  • EXTENDED PERIOD OF EXCLUSIVITY: In Scotland, as in most jurisdictions, a patent is initially granted for a fixed term, typically 20 years from the filing date. However, this protection is not indefinite. Renewing a patent allows the owner to extend the duration of their exclusivity, ensuring they can continue to enjoy the commercial benefits and prevent others from exploiting their invention.
  • MARKET MONOPOLY: With a renewed patent, the owner maintains a monopoly in the market for the patented invention. This exclusivity allows them to control the production, sale, and use of their invention, giving them a competitive advantage over potential competitors.
