Apply by Mail:

1. To Order an Official Extract from National Identity Register (1939), the applicant has to Mail the application to National Records of Scotland link
2. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer. Or the applicant has to download the application form from the following link
3. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
4. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
5. The applicant has to attach photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting it.
6. Mail all the application to National Registrar of Scotland. The mailing address is provided in “Office Locations and Contacts” section of this page.
7. The Applicant has to pay the prescribed fee of £20.
8. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
9. All applications are processed within a reasonable time, having regard to the particular circumstances of each application, including the completeness of information and documents submitted to the authority by the applicant.
10. The authority may seek additional information from an applicant if this is necessary to assess the application. The authority does not need to deal further with an application until the applicant has provided this additional information.
11. Once everything is accepted the authority will send the re-registration certificate via mail.
12. The entire process can be completed within 15 working days or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.

• The 1939 Register had been kept secret due to the 1939 Act which prohibited publication of the information. An application was received in December 2009 under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 and the restriction was reviewed by the Registrar General, with advice from the Scottish Government’s Freedom of Information Unit.
• Details of people who are contained within the 1939 Register who have since died are now being made available. Please be aware that due to the fact that this register is more modern than the Scottish census, which is closed for a 100-year period, it is only possible to provide limited information on the named individual; namely their address in 1939, marital status, age and occupation.
