Scotland - Apply for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)


Procedure

Apply Online

  1. To Apply for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), the applicant has to make the application online via link
  2. The applicant has to click the “Apply Now” option.
  3. The applicant needs to select the options and click the “Continue” button.
  4. Followed by clicking “Start Now” for entering details.
  5. The applicant has to enter the details and click the “Continue” button.
  6. Finally, click the “Next” button and upload all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  7. There is no fee for Employment and Support Allowance.
  8. After completing the details click the “Submit” button.
  9. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
  10. The applicant will be invited to attend a Work Capability Assessment.
  11. This assessment is conducted by healthcare professionals to determine the impact of the applicant’s health condition or disability on his/her ability to work.
  12. Following the assessment, the applicant will receive a decision regarding his/her ESA application.
  13. Then the application will be processed further.
  14. If the claim is successful, the applicant will be placed in one of two groups: the Support Group or the Work-Related Activity Group. Each group has different requirements and entitlements.
  15. This entire process can be completed within 20 days or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.

Eligibility

The applicant may be eligible to claim Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) in Scotland if he/she is:

  • Aged 16 or over and under the State Pension age
  • Unable to work because of a physical or mental health condition
  • Limited in the applicant’s ability to carry out daily living activities
  • Have limited capability for work
