1. To Apply for Design License, the applicant has to make the application online via the following link link
2. The applicant must click “Apply Online” and enter the type of design and click “Continue”.
3. Next the applicant must enter the details of design one by one.
4. Then the applicant must upload all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
5. Next the applicant must pay the prescribed fee. The fee details are mentioned in Fees section of this page.
6. IPO will let you know by email that they have received your application.
7. All applications are processed within a reasonable time, having regard to the circumstances of each application, including the completeness of information and documents submitted to the authority by the applicant.
8. The authority may seek additional information from an applicant if this is necessary to assess the application. The authority does not need to deal further with an application until the applicant has provided this additional information.
9. The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) will examine your application
10. If there are no issues your design will be registered - usually within 3 weeks.
11. The IPO will let you know if there are any problems. You will have at least 2 months to resolve them. You may get longer depending on the type of problem.

Apply By Post

2. The applicant has to download the application form from the following link – link
3. The applicant must fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
4. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
5. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
6. Post all the documents with the completed form to the Intellectual Property Office.
7. The mailing address are provided in “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page.
8. IPO will let you know by email that they have received your application.

• A design License lasts 5 years. You must renew your design registration every 5 years to keep it protected - up to a maximum of 25 years.

• A design License helps protect the appearance of a product, such as its shape or pattern. Registering your design makes it easier to proves that the design is legally yours when you created it. This will help if anyone tries to copy or use your design without your permission.

What you can register

• Your design must be new.

The design of something can include one or more of the following:

• Physical shape
• Configuration (or how different parts of a design are arranged together)
• Decoration or colour
• Pattern

What you cannot register

• Offensive material, for example swear words or pornographic images
• Designs making use of national flags you do not have permission to use
• Designs making use of official emblems or hallmarks, for example the Olympic rings or coats of arms
• The functionality of a design, for example a chair that folds down more quickly than others of the same kind
