Scotland - Apply for Charitable Organization License


Procedure

Apply Online

  1. To Apply for Charitable Organization License, the applicant must make the application online via the following link link
  2. If the applicant is an existing user, they can click “login” and enter email address and password.
  3. If the applicant is a new user, they can click “First time Registration” and create an account and then login.
  4. After logging in, the applicant must fill in all the necessary details in the application form.
  5. Next the applicant must attach all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  6. Review the applicant and submit the application.
  7. Next pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
  8. Once the applicant submits their application, they will get an automated email to confirm it has been received.
  9. The authority explains how they will come to a decision on the application.
  10. The authority will process the application as quickly as possible. Sometimes applications take longer to process if they are complex or need further information.
  11. It takes on average 100 days to process an application.

Eligibility

To be a charity in Scotland, an organization must meet the requirements of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005. These requirements include:

  • The organization must be established for a charitable purpose.
  • The organization must have a governing document that sets out its charitable purposes and how it will be managed.
  • The organization must have a committee of trustees who are responsible for managing the organization.
  • The organization must have a public benefit.
