Quebec - Obtain a Citizenship Certificate


Procedure

Apply In-Person

  1. To apply for a citizenship certificate, the applicant will need an application package. Visit the immigration and citizenship website, here is the package.
  2. Under “How are you applying” click on the “Paper” option.
  3. Click on the application link under the “Documents to Use” section of this page. (The applicant will need to update their pdf viewer to view the application form).
  4. Or use this link to the application form
  5. Fill in the application form with all the relevant details.
  6. Pay the fee (Fees can only be paid in the online mode).
  7. The link for the online fee payment can be found under the “Fees to be paid” section of this page.
  8. For those residing in Canada, the address where the application needs to be submitted can be found under the “Office Locations and Contacts” section of this page.
  9. Once submitted, the application will be forwarded for processing.
  10. It will take 15 months to process the certificate.


Payment of fee

  1. To pay the fee the applicant needs to visit the following website Link.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and under “Select application type”, select “Citizenship”.
  3. Click on “Continue”.
  4. Enter a quantity for the option/s that apply, and click on “Submit”.
  5. Select the “I am not a robot” option.
  6. Click on “Login and pay”, the applicant will have to log in using their credentials, if the applicant is a new user follow these steps to create an account:
    • Click on the “Register” option.
    • The applicant can opt to create an account using GCKey or a sign-in partner, choose the one that applies.
    • Enter details such as name and other information.
    • Click on “Submit”.
    • A link will be sent to the registered email ID, click on the link to verify the account.
    • Once the account has been verified, the applicant will need to go back to the login page and log in to their account.
  7. Pay using a credit or prepaid card, enter card details and pay.

Eligibility

  • The applicant should be a Canadian citizen.
  • The applicant can only apply if their original certificate got lost/stolen.
  • The applicant can apply for a certificate if they have to change their name.
  • The applicant needs to replace their citizenship certificate.
  • The applicant wants to pass down their citizenship to their child.
  • The applicant’s legal parent was a citizen of Canada or naturalized before the applicant was born.
  • The applicant will need a document that proves their citizenship; Passport, Job application, pension, social insurance number etc.
  • The applicant is unsure they are a Canadian citizen and want to know for sure.

Validity

  • The certificate is valid forever as long as the applicant is a citizen of Canada.

Processing Time

  • The applicant shall receive their citizenship certificate within 15 months from the submission of the application.

  • The online applications for citizenship certificates are only available for applicant’s whose parents are citizens of Canada.
  • If the applicant’s case is complex, they will be contacted for more information or the submission of additional documents.
