Qatar - Identification (ID) Expatriates


Procedure

  • Every expatriate who is issued a Residence Permit must hold a Qatar Residence ID Card
  • These are credit-card sized plastic cards containing a photo of the holder plus basic personal information.
  • It is mandatory for residents to have one, including their children.



Apply In-Person
Step 1 Apply for Residency Permit.

  1. The first step in obtaining a Residence card in Qatar is obtaining Residence Permit (RP) to enable you to reside in Qatar. One cannot apply for a Residence Card without a valid residence permit.
  2. The process of obtaining a residence permit is facilitated by the Expatriates Affairs Department of the Ministry of Interior.
  3. With all the correct paperwork in order, your Qatari employer will lodge the application for the residence permit.

  5. Once you obtain the residence permit you can now apply for the residency card.


Step 2 Apply for Residence Card

  1. The application process for obtaining a Residence Card can be handled by the expatriate resident or employer, who is offering sponsorship.
  2. With all the correct paperwork in order, your can lodge the application for the Residence Card. This is done by making an application to the Expatriates Affairs Department of the Ministry of Interior.
  3. You can do this by visiting the Expatriates Affairs Department offices in person. Here will be issued with an “Expatriate ID Card Application form” form to fill and submit. This form can also be downloaded from the Ministry of Interior MOI Website or it can be downloaded from the following link : Expatriate ID Card Application form
  4. Make the required payments for the residence card application.
  5. Attach the acknowledgement receipt and required documents to the application form and submit them to the Expatriates Affairs Department Offices of the Ministry of Interior. The required documents are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  6. Department’s officials will go through your application and if everything is in order they will begin processing the Residence Card
    • All the required condition should be met before submitting the application form.
    • The department will not be responsible for any delay resulting from failure to meet these conditions.
  7. The application process takes a period of one day before the residence permit is issued.
  8. Once ready the applicant will be notified issued with the residency card.



Note:

  • With the new card, you now have access to a range of services and can sponsor family members to come to Qatar.
  • The identity cards will be valid for the period of the residence permit.
  • If you choose to stay and work in Qatar, your Qatari employer must renew your residence permit/card as required, every one to three years.

Eligibility

  • Qatari employers (company or individual) are eligible to make the application for their employees (expatriate residence).

  • QR 100 for an ID card (as per the validity of residence permit).

Need for the Document

  • A residence permit allows visitors from overseas to stay and work in Qatar over a longer period of time, providing them with access to a range of important services. During this period the expatriate will need a residence card.
  • The Residence card is required to complete many bureaucratic procedures such as applying for driving licenses, opening bank accounts, to be able to sign a rental agreement, pay your fines, rent a car, officially identify yourself and also to gain admission to licensed premises.

  • Qatar issues sticker-free Residency Permit (RP) to expatriates and their families.
  • The RPs are not being stamped on people’s passports any more.
  • They are rather being issued new ID that bears more details about the holder than before and they are now known as Residence Cards. ( Expatriate IDs)
  • The new Residence Card holds several security features that should not be tampered and cannot be faked as well as it carry's data of the card holder.
  • Renewals of the cards can be done online.
