• If you're out of Ontario:
  • If your license will expire while you are traveling outside Ontario you can renew your license at a ServiceOntario centre 180 days before the license expires.
  • If you are traveling out of the province when your license expires but will be returning within six months, you may be sent a one-time temporary driver's license valid for up to a maximum of six months, so you can continue to drive while you are away.
    You will need to send a signed letter including:
    • your driver's license number or name and date of birth
    • the length of time and reason for your absence
    • an out-of-province mailing address
    • telephone number and/or e-mail address
    • a copy of your driver's license photo-card

• To renew your drivers license you will need:
  • Your renewal reminder (application, postcard or email). A renewal reminder is sent to you by mail or email 2 to 3 months before the expiry
  • A personal identification document (verifying your name, date of birth and signature).
• Renewing more than four weeks before expiry? Your new drivers license will arrive in the mail.
• Renewing with less than four weeks until the expiry? You will be given a temporary drivers license and your new drivers license will arrive in the mail.

Please note: Your renewal reminder will tell you what to do if you do not require a photo, do require an exam, or are over the age of 80.
