Ontario - Apply for Driver License


Procedure

Apply In-person.

  1. To apply for a driver’s license in Canada the applicant will need to first get a Learner’s license.
    • Visit the nearest Drive Test centre or the ServiceOntario Bay and College location in downtown Toronto
    • The applicant will have to book an appointment online.
    • The applicant can find the nearest centre and book an appointment here book online
    • The applicant will have to pay a fee.
    • The registry agent will check to see if you have good vision.
    • Once the applicant passes these tests, a learner’s license will be issued.
    • The applicant will receive a temporary license which they can use until the license card arrives by mail.
    • Once the applicant receives the license card, they will have to destroy the temporary license.
  2. After 12 months, the applicant is eligible for a G1 road test.
    • Schedule a test with the nearest drivers test centre.
    • The registry agent will inform you of the documents that are needed.
    • The applicant will have to pass a vision test.
    • The applicant will have to give a driver’s test.
    • Once the applicant passes these tests, they can buy the license card.
    • The applicant will be given a temporary license card until the card arrives through mail.
    • Destroy the temporary card once the license card arrives through mail.
    • After passing the G1 test, the applicant will receive a G2 license.
  3. After a period of 12 months and without any suspensions, the applicant can apply for a G license, to apply, follow these steps:
    • Schedule a test with the nearest drive test centre.
    • The registry agent will inform you of the documents that are needed.
    • The applicant will have to pass a vision test.
    • The applicant will have to give a driver’s test.
    • Once the applicant passes these tests, they can buy the license card.
    • The applicant will be given a temporary license card until the card arrives through mail.

  • Canadian Citizenship Card with photo
  • Secure Certificate of Indian Status Card (issued on or after December 15, 2009, by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada)
  • Ontario Photo Card


Permanent Residents

  • Permanent Resident (PR) Card
  • Record of Landing (IMM 1000)
  • Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292) accompanied by a valid passport from country of origin
  • Ontario Photo Card


Temporary Residents

  • Study Permit / Student Authorization (IMM 1442)
  • Work Permit / Employment Authorization (IMM 1442)
  • Visitor Record (IMM 1442)
  • Temporary Resident Permit (IMM 1442)
  • Refugee Status Claim (IMM 1434)
  • Acknowledgement of Intent to Claim Refugee Status (IMM 7703) with photo
  • Report Pursuant to the Immigration Act (IMM 1442) with photo
  • Ontario Photo Card
