Nova Scotia - Obtain your Marriage Certificate

  • Visit the Nova Scotia Vital Statistics office.

  • Drop off an application at any N.S. Registry of Motor Vehicle office or Access Nova Scotia office to be processed through the mail.

  1. Download an application form to request a certificate from the following link: Marriage Certificate Application - http://www.gov.ns.ca/snsmr/pdf/ans-vstat-marriage-death-certificate-form.pdf.
  2. Complete the application form.
  3. Send the application to:

  4. After your application and the proper payment have been received by the Vital Statistics office in Halifax, the certificate will normally be processed within 10 business days (provided the birth has been registered, and no additional information is required), and sent to you by mail. Please allow additional days for postal delivery.

Short Form Marriage Certificate

  • surnames and given names of both parties to the marriage

Long Form Marriage Certificate

  • place of marriage
  • given name(s) and surname
  • trade or profession
  • marital status
  • age
  • religious denomination
  • residence
  • place of birth
  • full name of parents
  • birthplace of parents





Need for the Document

After Nova Scotia Vital Statistics receives your Marriage Registration Form and registers the event, you may apply to Vital Statistics for an official Marriage Certificate which is your legal proof that the marriage has occurred.
