Northern Territory - Transfer an Overseas Driver Licence


Procedure

  1. To transfer your overseas licence you will need to present your valid and current overseas driver licence.
  2. You will also need to complete an application form and submit it along with all other required documents.
  3. Pass the eyesight test.


Note: If you are not from a recognised country you will also need to pass a theory and practical (driving test).





Required Documents

  • Valid and current overseas driver licence
  • International driving permit (issued in country of origin) or:
    • an official translation of the overseas licence into English by an Authorised Translator; or
    • an original letter from the licensing authority in the country of origin or the relevant consul or diplomatic corps confirming the licence details and status; or
    • an original letter from the licensing authority in the country of origin or the relevant consul or diplomatic corps confirming the licence details and status.
  • Completed form L1- Application for a Northern Territory Driver/Rider Licence
  • Evidence of Identity and Residency

Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) Customer Service Centre

MVR has Customer Service Centres throughout the Northern Territory.
For those living in a remote locality, or outstation you may go to your nearest Police Station.

You must change over your driver licence and vehicle registration within three (3) months of residing in the Northern Territory.
