Niue - Register Death


Procedure

Death in Hospital

  1. The nurse will take the medical certificate book to the attending doctor.
  2. The doctor will then complete a medical certificate of death.
  3. The medical certificate will either be taken to the Civil Registry by a health staff or given to the family who will file it with the Civil Registry Office.
  4. After the family have submitted the medical certificate, details will be entered directly into the Death Register (hardcopy) and will be assigned a registry number.
  5. The Registry office will advise the family of the deceased when they can come back to collect the Death Certificate.


Death at Home

  1. The family will need to call a doctor to attend or the police will transport the body to the hospital to be pronounced.
  2. The doctor who attended to the deceased complete a medical certificate of death.
  3. The medical certificate will either be taken to the Civil Registry by a health staff or given to the family of the deceased.
  4. After the family have submitted the medical certificate to the Civil Registry Office, details will be entered directly into the Death Register (hardcopy) and will be assigned a registry number.
  5. The Registry office will advise the family of the deceased when they can come back to collect the Death Certificate.


Death Off-Island (body returned to Niue)

  1. The overseas death certificate from the place of death will be collected by the civil registry staff at the airport.
  2. The Civil Registry Office will retain the overseas death certificate on file (with the medical certificates for deaths that occurred locally) but is not entered into the logbook as the death has already been legally registered.
