Procedure

Apply In-Person

  1. To apply for a change of name in Newfoundland and Labrador, the applicant can submit the application, along with supporting documents; find the mailing address under the “Office Locations and Contacts” section of this page.

  4. The applicant will have to publish in the newspaper that they have changed their name. (If they do not want to, they can contact authorities for further information).
  5. The application will be forwarded to the relevant authorities.
  6. The applicant will likely have to pay fees unless they are reclaiming an indigenous name.
  7. The applicant will receive their change of name certificate, which can be collected from the office, within a few days to a few weeks from the submission of the application.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be 16 years of age or older.
  • The applicant must be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador.



Fees

  • The applicant will have to pay a fee of 100$ to change their name.
  • To apply for a new birth certificate the applicant will have to pay a fee of 35/30$.

Validity

The document is valid forever and does not need to be renewed.

Processing Time

The applicant shall receive their change of name within 6-8 weeks from the submission of the application.
