You can apply for this licence after six months on your learner licence. To progress to this step, youll have to pass a practical test of your driving skills.

Once youve got your learner licence, get in as much driving practice as you can. Learn driving as much good quality, supervised driving experience as possible in preparation for your restricted licence.

• Entitles you to drive unsupervised between the hours of 5am and 10pm with no passengers except:
  • Your partner,
  • Your parent or legal guardian,
  • A child who lives with you and is under the care of you or your partner
  • A person for whom you care are a primary caregiver, or
  • A relative living with you who is a beneficiary
• Entitles you to drive at any time of day with a supervisor who has held a full New Zealand licence for over two years seated in the front passenger seat. If you are accompanied by a supervisor you can carry passengers including those noted above
