New South Wales - Certificate of Identity (COI)


Procedure

Apply In-Person:

  1. To Obtain Certificate of identity (COI), the applicant has to approach Passport office. Contact details are mentioned in “Office Locations & Contacts” of this page. Or use the following given Contact Link
  2. The application form must be obtained from a nearby passport office by the applicant.
  3. The applicant has to fill-in all the details in the form.
  4. Applicant should make sure to attach all the documents that are mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page (Both photocopies and originals).
  5. Submit the application with the required document to appropriate office.
  6. Submitting address is mentioned in “Office Locations & Contacts” of this page.
  7. There is no fee requirement for this procedure.
  8. Once urgent processing is accepted, a processing fee is due.
  9. Australian Passport will issue the certificate and notify the applicant.

Eligibility

  • It is given to individuals who:
    • Are not citizens of Australia.
    • Are going to depart Australia or a territory of Australia.
    • Are unable to obtain a travel document from their place of citizenship or are stateless.




Fees

  • There is no fee requirement for this procedure.
  • Once urgent processing is accepted, a processing fee is due.




Validity

  • To permit travel, a one-way limited COI must be issued, and its validity must not exceed the minimal time frame required for travel.

Need for the Document

  • The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issues the Australian Certificate of Identity (COI), a biometric travel document, to foreign nationals who are preparing to leave Australia or one of its territories.

  • The COI/CTD application should be put on hold in accordance with the "incomplete application" policy when a client is directed to DIBP to update their personal information.
