• Pass thevision test
• Bring a primary 4-point ID (civil birth certificate, US Passport, US Department of State birth certificate, US adoption papers, certificate of naturalization or certificate of citizenship)
• Show proof of enrollment in a driver training course
• Present a signed letter with parental or guardian consent
• Pay the $10 student permit fee.
• Permits are valid for two years and must be carried when operating a vehicle
• If your permit islost or stolen, you must request a duplicate. Duplicates must be obtained by the driving school

Practice supervised driving for at least six monthsEdit

You must observe the following restrictions during the supervised driving period:

• Display areflectorized decalon each license plate (front/back); decals available at motor vehicle agencies, $4 per pair
• No driving after 11:01 p.m. and before 5:00 a.m.
• You must be accompanied in the front seat by an adult supervising driver who is at least 21 years of age and who possesses a valid New Jersey driver license and has a minimum of three years driving experience
• Parent(s), guardian(s) or dependant(s) are allowed as passengers. A dependant is a permit or probationary driver's child, not siblings
• Only one additional passenger is allowed unless accompanied by a parent or guardian
• You can't use cell phones, hand held video games or any other hands-free interactive, wireless communication device
• Seat belts must be worn at all times
• SeeGDL Exemptionsfor hours-related exemptions for employment or religious reasons
  

You must hold this permit in good standing for a minimum of six months before graduating to the next level.

You must show at least ONE of the following documents.

• Civil birth certificate*or certified copy from one of the 50 states, District of Columbia or a US territory. Photocopies or certificates from hospitals or religious entities are not accepted. Get information for Jersey City/Hudson Countybirth certificate requirements
• US Department of State birth certificate

(Form FS-545, FS 240 or DS-1350)

• US passport, current or expired less than 3 years, or current US passport card
• Current NJ digital driver license
• Current NJ digital non-driver ID card
• Current NJ digital boat license
• Valid active duty US military photo ID card
• US adoption papers
• Certificate of naturalization

• Certificate of citizenship

When you show any one of the documents, you will get four points.

For drivers ages 16 and up, MVC offers a three-phase process:

• Student learner's permit(minimum six months of supervised driving)
• Probationary license(minimum one year of restricted but unsupervised driving)

New Jersey offers a graduated driving license program to first-time drivers. This graduated license is divided into categories according to the new driver's age: Early Bird Road, Young Adult, and Adult. Each category starts with getting a permit, which we'll cover in detail here. If you are under 21 years old or have never had a driver license, New Jersey requires that you complete a period of supervised driving before getting a basic driver license. Knowledge testEdit

All applicants must pass a knowledge test on traffic laws, rules and regulations by scoring at least an 80% on a 50-question test. The test is administered by a computer and the results are available immediately.

How to take the testEdit

Visit a MVC Driver Testing Center: (no fee charged to take the test)

• The written tests are offered in the following languages: English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Japanese
• Oral tests are offered in English and Spanish

Foreign language optionsEdit

If you are unable to take a knowledge test in your native language, you may use an approved interpreter:

• A full-time faculty member of a state-accredited college or university with proper identification from the institution
• A priest, minister, rabbi or other religious leader of a recognized organization with credentials of association with the organization
• An individual with an interpreter identification card issued by the U.S. Department of State, Office of Language Services

Hearing-impaired optionsEdit

If you are hearing-impaired you can take the knowledge test with an MVC approved Department of State interpreter. MVC will pay the interpreter's fee for hearing-impaired applicants. In order to qualify, the interpreter must be one of the following:

• Certified by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and listed with the New Jersey Division of the Deaf
• Evaluated by the Division of the Deaf and on the approved list of that divisions interpreters

Vision testEdit

New Jersey requires all applicants to have their eyesight checked through a vision test. Vision tests are given at MVC agencies offering driver testing services. VisitLocationsto find a test center located near you.

In order to pass the vision test, you must have 20/50 visual acuity in at least one eye with or without corrective lenses.

If you pass the test using corrective lenses, you will have a restriction on your license indicating that you must wear these corrective lenses while behind-the-wheel.

If you fail the test, you will have to visit your doctor and complete Form ST-14.

Expired, lost or stolen permitsEdit

Expired PermitsEdit

GDL permits are valid for two years. All other permits expire 90 days after they are issued. If your permit expires, you must follow the same steps as you would to get a new permit.
Note: Only moped and student learner permits are renewable after the expiration date.

How to renew a student permit after expiration- under 17Edit

• Contact your driving school instructor
• Pay $10 permit fee

Lost or stolen permits- under 17Edit

If you are under 17 years old and have completed your behind the wheel training, you must contact your driving school instructor to replace a special learners permit.

Lost or stolen permits- age 17 or olderEdit

Visit an MVC Agency that offers Driver Testing Services to replace an examination permit issued to drivers age 17 or older:

• Pass6 Point ID and address verification
• (Pay $3 fee
• If your permit was stolen, remember to report it to the police
