New Jersey offers a graduated driving license program to first-time drivers. This graduated license is divided into categories according to the new driver's age: Early Bird Road, Young Adult, and Adult. Each category starts with getting a permit, which we'll cover in detail here. If you are under 21 years old or have never had a driver license, New Jersey requires that you complete a period of supervised driving before getting a basic driver license. MVC'sGraduated Driver License (GDL) program introduces driving privileges in phases.
All applicants must pass a knowledge test on traffic laws, rules and regulations by scoring at least an 80% on a 50-question test. The test is administered by a computer and the results are available immediately.
You can study for the test by reading theNJ Driver Manual(answers can be found here).
Visit a MVC Driver Testing Center: (no fee charged to take the test)
If you are unable to take a knowledge test in your native language, you may use an approved interpreter:

New Jersey requires all applicants to have their eyesight checked through a vision test. Vision tests are given at MVC agencies offering driver testing services. VisitLocationsto find a test center located near you.
In order to pass the vision test, you must have 20/50 visual acuity in at least one eye with or without corrective lenses.
If you pass the test using corrective lenses, you will have a restriction on your license indicating that you must wear these corrective lenses while behind-the-wheel.
If you fail the test, you will have to visit your doctor and complete Form ST-14.
For more details on Vision test, follow the link http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Licenses/VisionTest.htm
GDL permits are valid for two years. All other permits expire 90 days after they are issued. If your permit expires, you must follow the same steps as you would to get a new permit.
Note: Only moped and student learner permits are renewable after the expiration date.
If you are under 17 years old and have completed your behind the wheel training, you must contact your driving school instructor to replace a special learners permit.
Visit an MVC Agency that offers Driver Testing Services to replace an examination permit issued to drivers age 17 or older:
